In recent weeks, the Australian Government has reinforced this commitment by offering much needed moral leadership. This includes announcing further sanctions on russia to mark the third anniversary of russia’s war, endorsing President Zelenskyy, reaffirming the indisputable facts of russia’s aggression, and considering a potential peacekeeping role for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched an illegal invasion of Ukraine, an independent, sovereign democracy and a peaceful, free neighbor. This war has taken an immense toll on Ukrainian people — mentally, physically, spiritually. The relentless attacks on Ukrainians and their homes, schools, hospitals and vital infrastructure have killed tens of thousands of innocent people. Many more have been maimed, and millions have fled their homes, leaving them devastated as they pick up the pieces of their lives and livelihoods.

Over these three long and difficult years, the facts have not changed: Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is the victim. Ukrainie is a strong democracy and is entitled to its sovereignty and independence. Ukraine needs security guarantees and its rightful seat at the negotiating table.
 
I write to urge you to ensure Ukraine is not forgotten and that Ukrainians continue to receive vital support. Ukraine faces immense challenges and still has a long road ahead to end the war on its own terms, rebuild, and recover. Ukrainians are deeply grateful for the support provided so far, but I believe there is more that Ukraine’s partners, like Australia, must do.

This may include the Government meeting Ukraine’s request for 200 additional Bushmasters and 250 M113 armoured personnel carriers, or enacting its policy of prioritising the assignment to Ukraine of redundant military equipment, such as Tiger helicopters (which are being replaced by Apaches) or M1A1 Abrams tanks (which are being replaced by M1A2s). There could also be a specific budgetary allocation for Ukraine aid, as opposed to drawing down on Defence’s standing expenditure. These are just some of the high-impact opportunities our community is asking the Government to consider.

Australia has stood side-by-side with Ukraine from the start, helping Ukrainians to push back against a criminal, genocidal invasion, uphold the rules-based global order, and support democracy and freedom. Our fight is not over, and we are counting on your support to ensure we can bring russia’s war to an end and secure a just, durable peace.
