In recent days and weeks, Russia has intensified its barbarous and immoral assault on Ukraine - launching a record number of drone, cruise and ballistic missiles across the country. These attacks have deliberately targeted cities and towns, hospitals and residential neighbourhoods.

This has followed more than three years since Russia launched its illegal invasion of Ukraine, an independent, sovereign democracy and a peaceful, free neighbour. The relentless attacks on Ukrainians and their homes, schools, hospitals and vital infrastructure have killed tens of thousands of innocent people. Many more have been maimed, and millions have fled their homes, leaving them devastated as they pick up the pieces of their lives and livelihoods.

While Ukrainians are deeply grateful for the support provided so far by the Australian Government, I believe there is more that Ukraine’s partners, like Australia, must do. I urge you and the Australian Government to:

1) Increase military aid for Ukraine to help defend its people and territory.
2) Apply stronger diplomatic and sanctions pressure on Russia, including by banning the import of products made from Russian crude oil into Australia.
3) Stand firmly with Ukraine on the national and international arena: speak out publicly, advocate for Russia to be held accountable for its war crimes, and support the diverting of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.

Russia’s war has taken an immeasurable toll — mentally, physically, spiritually - but the Ukrainian people remain undefeated and determined to fight for their sovereignty, freedom and future. Their fight is not over.

We are counting on your leadership and support to help bring Russia’s brutal war to an end - and to secure a just and lasting peace.
